Watch this or I will slap you…

I am never overly excited when a movie gets remade, sometimes they’s is great, but most of the time they’s is shitty…Horror films in particular suffer from some insatiable need to be remade into copies of Hostel starring Leatherface, Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees. I don’t want to jinx this, but I feel like we may actually have a remake that sets itself apart from most horror remakes. Watch the trailer for the upcoming A Nightmare On Elm Street remake to see what I mean…

First I think Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy is an incredible choice, the dude creeps me out when his face isn’t horribly burnt. I love the trippy imagery in the brief glimpses of the dream sequences, and I think the overall feel of the trailer indicates a closer aesthetic tie to the original material than most remakes seem to miss.

Will I be able to enjoy a Nightmare movie without Johnny Depp getting sucked into a bed and creating a blood geyser? Only time will tell, only time will tell.

This is amazing.

I saw Feist last year and she had an artist in the back of the stage doing very similar work but with paint and water. This is just as impressive if not more. Watch it now.

Old Crows/Young Cardinals/Happy Me….

“We are not the kids we used to be, stop wishing for yesterday!” is the chorus of the (half) title track/ first song on the new album Old Crows/Young Cardinals by Alexisonfire. And they are not kidding around. With a tone that borders on a warning and a cry of annoyance, the boys of St. Catherines let everyone listening know this is a whole new Alexisonfire, they have grown up, they have evolved, they have “buried screamo” as George Petit once promised when recording the album.

And how do you “bury screamo”? Well first you stop screaming. George has replaced his vocal style with one not unlike a certain Lemmy from Motorhead, more of a raspy rock and roll growl than the usual unintelligible lyric howling that the band became famous for. How else do you “bury screamo”? Well you have your singer stop being so emotional; Dallas’ trademark voice is still on high display here, but he seems less like he is crooning to young girls than ever before, now opting to shout his lyrics in a powerful though still beautiful voice.

So how is the album? Well to be honest, it is incredible. They have crafted easily the most listenable and musically diverse album of their careers, and also their most personal lyrically and thematically. Starting with their plea to fans to stop “wishing for yesterday” on Old Crows, the band decides to really air out how they feel about a variety of topics, including our neighbors to the south, America. On the track Sons of Privelege the band takes a bold risk insulting the very country they would probably like to expand their audience in, the USA. With lyrics including “We’ll see if your empire stands the test of time” and “its time to justify your pride, in America” they make it known they have issues with much of American culture today.

Another song with a message comes in the form of one of the best Alexisonfire songs ever, Emerald Street. A song about poverty and the decline of wealth that we all have experienced in the last 2 years, this song comes with one of the catchiest hooks the boys have ever put out when they all shout “all the boys in the halfway houses wave to the girls on Emerald Street.” I guarantee if you give this song a listen, you will be humming it within just a few repeats.

Rounding out the album are a few other power rock songs such as the “love” song Accept Crime, about when things are wrong but feel right. As well as Born and Raised another great track about growing up and finding a mind of your own; as Dallas almost whines “I’ve lost all direction” and “like a bird, from the north, our hearts will roam in search of warmth”.

Finally I must mention the most important musical gem found on this disk. Midway through the album rests easily the most beautiful, powerful, honest and impressive song the band has ever written. Titled simply The Northern the song slows the album down, utilizes outside instruments such as organs and employs far more layering than ever found in any Alexionfire song before it. With the biblical chanting lyrics “he comes, he comes” and “roll Jordan, roll Jordan” the song paints the picture of men reflecting on what life really is and where we all go in the end; with one of the few truly Screamo inspired moments on the disk George screams “Oh brother you want to be there, I’m gonna go to Heaven when I die” and Dallas sings “I wan’t to go to Heaven” all the while we also hear the repeating “roll Jordan” chant, creating a layered piece of musical gold. This is truly a wonderful song, and much different than anything the band has done before. I only hope it is a direction they are heading in even more so in the future.

Now I know I am getting a little long winded so I will wrap it up like this. Say what you will about Alexisonfire, the band, their fans and the horrid emo/screamo scene that they helped create. The band knows they are past all of that, and this album proves it, it is easily one of the best hard rock albums to come out in the last few years. From start to finish it is 42 minutes of pure rock and roll, some fast, some slow, some hard, some soft but all tasty.

In all honesty even if you have hated every single Alexisonfire have put out before, give The Northern a listen, it is wonderful, and may just change your mind about these guys.

Words cannot describe how excited I am for this movie, a creepy horror thriller directed by Scorsese, it looks too good to be true.

Werewolf Bar Mitzvah

My favourite clip from 30 rock so far. The first time I saw it, I think I pooped a little.

And here is the audio from the actual song, yes a whole song exists.

Good Lord Tracy, what will you come up with next?

Bro-Mitzvah

The funny little kid from Role Models made a rap video about want to have a bar mitzvah because all his Jewish friends get sweet cash when they turn 13. Just watch.

There is no way this little bastard wrote that himself. I like when he says Kim Kardashian and then wiggles his hands around an imaginary ass, because her ass is big, get it?
